Background of the Study
Nutrition plays a fundamental role in health and well-being, and nurses are key players in promoting healthy dietary habits among patients. Nursing students, as future healthcare providers, must be well-versed in nutrition and its impact on patient care. Incorporating nutrition education into nursing programs ensures that students are equipped with the knowledge to provide dietary counseling, recommend appropriate interventions, and promote wellness in diverse patient populations (Johnson & Taylor, 2023).
The Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital has recognized the importance of integrating nutrition education into its nursing curriculum. By providing nursing students with knowledge on proper dietary habits, nutritional assessment, and the relationship between nutrition and chronic diseases, the university aims to improve students’ own dietary habits while also preparing them for patient education in clinical settings. However, it is unclear how effective nutrition education is in influencing students’ personal dietary choices. This study will examine the impact of nutrition education on nursing students’ dietary habits and whether it translates to improved health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
While nutrition education is integral to nursing education, there is limited research on how such education influences nursing students' dietary habits. At the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, nursing students receive formal training in nutrition, but it is unclear whether this training results in meaningful changes in their own eating behaviors. This study aims to examine the impact of nutrition education on nursing students' dietary habits and assess whether improved dietary habits lead to better health outcomes for students.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nutrition education on nursing students’ dietary habits at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital.
2. To evaluate nursing students' knowledge of nutrition and its relationship to health outcomes.
3. To explore the barriers to adopting healthy dietary habits among nursing students.
Research Questions
1. How does nutrition education influence nursing students' dietary habits at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital?
2. What is the level of nursing students' knowledge about nutrition and its impact on health outcomes?
3. What barriers prevent nursing students from adopting healthy dietary habits?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nutrition education significantly improves nursing students' dietary habits.
2. Nursing students with higher levels of nutrition knowledge are more likely to adopt healthier dietary habits.
3. Barriers to adopting healthy dietary habits negatively affect nursing students' ability to implement nutrition education in their own lives.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the difficulty in measuring long-term changes in dietary habits and the potential bias in self-reported dietary behaviors.
